All work has been completed, and the first track is now accepting normal service.
Tonnelle Avenue looks complete!
Additionally, the hudson county shaft finished its slurry walls a bit ago and is now in the grouting stage:
It’s been complete for a few days now. They over the past two or three days were repaving and restriping the road.
Currently, more site-prep for the TBMs is taking place with a mold being built by the bridge to permit a large concrete pour.
Board Meeting earlier today! Presentation: https://www.gatewayprogram.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/March-2026-Board-Meeting-Deck-for-website.pdf
Here’s hoping for compensation over the February work stoppage as well as full funding continuing.
The second TBM is starting to arrive.
There is a second cutter head starting to be put together at the launch site.
In addition, it is now confirmed work is underway to assemble the first TBM.
The first TBM will likely be launched later this spring into the summer. Another update is that the floor of HYCC3 has been poured and connected to the existing tunnel box.
Footage taken 100 years ago. Gov. A. Harry “Red” Moore and Gov. Al Smith walked the Hudson River Vehicular Tunnel and ate lunch in the middle of the unopened roadway.
Wrong tunnel: that is the Holland Tunnel which is a road tunnel in Jersey City.
This thread is covering the expansion of capacity into Penn Station. Neat video, though.
I know, I just thought it would be interesting to see footage from a similar project under the Hudson. Happy to move this to the vintage thread
Nice video. I was half way through before I realized it was about a car tunnel in the 1930s and not a rail tunnel in 2026.
That scene of the politicians walking out of the darkened tunnel is right out of Stephen King’s The Stand…even though that was yet another one (Lincoln)!
On the New York side of things, tunnel boxes have already been put into place “between the High Line and Hudson Yards … and is connected to the first and second tunnel boxes to Penn Station.” As for when the North Bergen boring machine will be activated? Prendergast predicted it will occur in the second or third quarter of the year, with an occasion planned to celebrate its commencement.
TBM assembly is full steam ahead. GDC has put out a notice highlighting what is to come.
It seems the schedule has changed as well, with GDC reporting that both TBMs will be ready by fall, which means that, likely due to the funding lapse, work has been pushed back.
Assembly of both machines is expected to take several months, with both TBMs anticipated to
be fully assem
In addition, PSE&G is currently working on an electrical tie-in that will provide power to support TBM operations.
And, while viewing the live cam, more of the second TBM’s parts have arrived, and the concrete apron has been poured.
A bunch of TBM parts are also being moved around to be transferred to the assembly site.
As for the Portal Bridge, old catenary poles (including the extremely bent ones) were removed along with some now disused trackage on the old bridge.
Here’s an official time-lapse of the progress on the Portal Bridge from 2022 to March 2026. In addition to bridge work, there’s a view showing the process of connecting the new bridge track to the existing NEC.
The 2nd TBM’s parts are appearing at a rapid rate. Significant work on TBM 1’s assembly is yet to be seen and most work going on is site prep and preparing for assembly.

This news channel has some good views inside the tent where they are assembling the TBM cutters as well as footage inside the mined area next to the Tonnelle Ave bridge.
Some closer photos of the Concrete Casing Work.
Additionally, the construction of the lower secant pile wall at the palisades tunnel portal has begun.
Here’s a status report regarding the construction of the TBMs.
Currently, work is being done to construct the muck pit where spoils from the rear of each TBM are to be collected. The TBM launch site is not ready yet, as 75 feet of rock still has to be removed.
Where crews are currently digging piles will likely be removed as the TBMs will be drilling directly into the hard rock face.
A model pictured in the news article shows how the launch site may look:
In addition, there is now no clear date on when tunneling will begin. While preliminary assembly and prep work are underway, no definitive timeline for the start of tunneling is available at this time.
That model is super helpful for visualization! And from the looks of it, they have a long way to go before they can even start blasting out the remaining 75 ft of rock…
They didn’t exactly mention that it’ll be blasted other than “excavated by conventional means”. Either way, there is no set date for TBM launching, but both are on the property and even with the illegal seizure of funds, the manufacturer made sure they got to the site in a timely manner.
