NEW YORK | Gateway Project (Hudson Rail Tunnel)

Seems work is back to full steam ahead. Excellent news. With the weather warming up and the snow melting, we’ll probably see development concerning the TBMs resuming.

estimated completion for the manhattan shaft? or will that be built after the tunnels have been dug?

They’re working on the Manhattan Shaft right now. They’re still building the slurry walls, so I can assume it’ll be finished sometime after the Palisades / Hoboken one. It will, though be finished before the Hudson Tubes reach it since it is where the river TBMs will be pulled out and permits the ~600 foot of tunnel to be built that connects to HYCC3.

The first TBM’s parts are all on-site so assembly will occur very soon.

Amtrak has provided a massive photo dump of work going on at the Portal Bridge so far. There’s one more week to go before the bridge opens for train traffic.

Great progress! I love the look of those rail trucks haha.

Something cool was set up at the Palisades Tunnel site: a demonstration of the tunnel liners.

TBM assembly is underway. It seems that a narrow-gauge railroad will be employed to remove spoils as the TBMs progress, as a number of carts are on site and tracks are in place by the TBM launch area.

The cutter head of the first TBM is also being removed from the delivery location, likely to be placed by the assembly area by the bridge.

Tonnelle Avenue is also wrapping up with barriers being removed, likely to permit final lane striping.

Some new work being done above the palisades tunnel portal next to tonnelle ave!

Also, found this photo album: Hudson Tunnel Project - March 2026 | Flickr . Has some very high quality and recent pictures of the worksite:

Thw Township of North Bergen also posted online and featured some of those photos.

In addition, the second TBM will be arriving later this month and the project risks another stoppage on two to three months if full federal funding is not restored. Because of this, the track alignment that brings trains to the tunnel and the under-river portion of the tunnel blth have had their respective work contract awards put on hold.

The GDC also provided an update via press release which announced the completion of the Tonnelle Avenue bridge among other status updates. The Hudson County slurry wall is also complete which means excavation will start soon.

On top of the tunnel portal, a communications and electrical building will be situated up there. That work might be for ground stabilization as the building won’t be built until tunnelling is substantially complete.

Ah! It looks like I must of accidently stumbled across the Township’s album. And interesting theory behind the building ground stabilization. Makes sense to me!

That press release had a lot of useful info. Thanks for sharing. The “GDC’s contractor completed installation of the Hudson County Access Shaft slurry wall” is especially interesting.

And the steel truss they are building off the bulkhead. Any ideas to what that could for? Looks like its meant to support some heavy equipment.

Its part of the Hudson River ground stabilization. They have the cofferdam in the middle of the river and they are doing it by the shore where the tunnel will run under. In this project, they are injecting grout into the riverbed to stiffen it for the TBMs

Some more good news: The Appellate Court has ruled the Trump administration has to continue funding Gateway. The court argued that restraining order filed against the administration was upheld as if it was terminated, the government can easily stop payments. As expected, the government plans to appeal.

Today is also a big day. The first train over the bridge will be an NJT train. This is a monumental first step and the bridge is essentially complete. Regular service is expected to commence on the 15th and in the fall, the second track will be connected, finally enabling the old bridge to be retired.

Here’s an actual video from one of the people invited to ride:

NJ Transit has just posted this image as well, showing the train going over the bridge. It seems power is not hooked up yet on the catenary lines as the train is running under diesel power.

Another legal case decided! This one from just a few hours ago: Judge dismisses most of Gateway suit but knocks Trump admin for breach of contract

“Judge dismisses most of Gateway suit but knocks Trump admin for breach of contract.”

A federal judge dismissed the bulk of the Gateway Development Commission’s suit over the Trump administration’s refusal to pay for the Hudson River Tunnel, because the funding has been temporarily restored by another court.

The order dismissed six of the suit’s eight counts. Arguments are expected to continue on the remaining two counts, one of which seeks damages for additional costs incurred by last month’s work stoppage after funding ran out, while the other accuses USDOT of breaching the contract’s ‘implied duty of good faith and fair dealing.’

GDC and the federal government will be back in Judge Hertling’s courtroom for a March 24 status conference on those matters.

The Trump admin will probably twist this into a “victory” despite the fact that because another court restored some funding, negating the need for a portion of this suit to progress (and that a portion is still going to court to address the damages by the stoppage of work)

And less than a day after the first Portal Bridge train ride:

https://abc7ny.com/post/nj-transit-suspended-newark-penn-station-nyc-amtrak-portal-bridge-wire-issues/18709390/

I was an hour and a half late to work. NJ transit is an absolute joke. Worst in the country. They don’t care about their customers at all. The train station I board from is crumbling with no signs of repair coming anytime soon. Half of one of the platforms you can’t even use.

The World Cup will show the entire world how much an international embarrassment NJ Transit really is.

This was on the old portal bridge. Had the new bridge not been ready, the delays could’ve been much worse
