NEW YORK | Gateway Project (Hudson Rail Tunnel)

Unfortunately doesn’t work if you’re Andy Byford and have to deal with the sleazebag that is Andrew Cuomo. NYC will elect him because we love the abuse apparently.

Oh true that. Andy should have tried renting a muscle car from Hertz or something.

Andrew Yang was the “Front Runner” and was at “the top of the polls” until the first primary. Not saying it can’t happen, Adams got elected for christ’s sake. I think as it gets closer too it as he has to interact outside of his very controlled early primary campaign he’s gonna be “My main man Andy C, from Queens” and it
will jog the public’s memory of him being a shmuck. He’s not the mystery box Adams kind of was, he’s a very known quantity.

I’ve seen his videos before, and they were good, but this one was very informative Really sums up the realities of the current situation and what is being done.

I consider Andrew Cuomo a skinny Chris Christie. Neither he nor Adams will be among my 5 rank choice picks.

Portal Bridge is looking nice. All the catenary poles (except one) on the northern side are left to be installed and the two end arches have concrete decking being prepared with the wood formwork being set up.

At The Tonnelle Avenue site, there’s utility relocation going on. Water and gas pipes are being set up which will allow for Phase 3 to move swiftly.

Construction is slowing on the Portal Bridge. Considering most of the heavy work is finished, work is focusing more on getting the arches finished, wiring the catenary and preparing the first track for use.

The biggest thing is that the temporary wooden walkways along the actual main span are being taken down on the southern side. There’s 3 segments that are now essentially “complete” since the temporary walkways are removed.

The arches are receiving their walkways which will permit workers to set up the castings for concrete.

Nothing major is going on at the north side other than rail installation. There’s one catenary pole that isn’t installed yet along with the actual railings for the bridge span.

More exciting things are happening at Tonnelle Avenue. There’s pile driving that extends all the way to the rock face and the excavation is complete for the 2nd phase. Soon forms will be erected and rebar put in for the concrete pouring for the bridge abutments.

The piling is definitely to support eventual construction of the tunnel segment.

In Hudson Yards, excavation is moving at a glacial speed but it seems like the area under the high line is quite deep and that is where they are focusing most of their efforts at this time.

Tonnelle Avenue work is expected to be done by fall. This article also has a nice recent aerial image of the site. The work in NY is about 50% complete and is expected to conclude sometime in 2026.

Weird location to acquire for the tunnel. Even the article points that out.

Maybe it’ll be used for a ventilation/utility shaft?

There will be a ventilation shaft in Weehawken. This is likely to permit that and it will remain vacant until they start drilling the tubes.

It will also be used to remove the TBM used for the Palisades tunnel..

Maybe they need a staging area.

A staging area for the tunnel under the Hudson as well as a place remove the TBM for the Palisades tunnel. I am guessing the TBM to go under the Hudson will be a unique design. different from the one that goes through the rock on the Palisades part.

The Hudson TBM will be different. The Palisades TBM is designed to cut through hard rock. The Hudson one will cut through the softer riverbed.

Looks like the temporary wooden walkways are coming down on the south end. This is visible on the EarthCam as well.

On the North end, they’re starting to dismantle parts of the temporary pier.
