The 3rd arch made a cameo in an unrelated video on Carver Company’s social media. It’s just about ready to be delivered especially since the current estimate is by the middle of this month it will depart Coeymans for installation on the bridge.
The Palisades tunnel project was awarded in August.
I know. I mentioned the Palisades Tunnel portion being awarded in August. The NYC non-river portion was the contract they just awarded. They aren’t going to dig the Palisades portion until the provisions are made to launch the Palisades TBMs.
I believe the TBM has to actually be built.
Correct. There has been no news for either side’s TBMs being built. The only thing is that the contracts for the work have been awarded so I assume with that then they start assembling the machines.
Excavation now is underway for phase 2 of the Tonelle Ave project.
The Hudson Yards site is now deep enough to fit an excavator in the pit and there are yellow beams which I assume help hold the walls from caving in installed as well.
The Portal Bridge’s third (and final) arch is confirmed to arrive sometime later this month. Portal North Bridge Milestones Tell a Larger Story of Regional Transformation - STV
Get ready, the final arch is coming starting tomorrow. They packed the arch onto the barge and it will be shipped tomorrow morning.

The arch is currently en-route. By tomorrow afternoon it will be tied up until Sunday morning, when it will be brought to the bridge site.
At approximately 3 AM, the 3rd arch has arrived to the bridge site. It will be placed on the perches so the arch can be affixed to the jacks that will lift it into position. This image also gives us a good look at the cables as they currently are not tensioned, which is why the white supports are in place.
Photo from NJ DOT two days ago showing the arch on its way passing under several bridges.
The bridge arch is on-site, and I’m sure the heavy winds are delaying its installation.
Here’s an earthcam capture from today showing the arch on site:
Someone posted a view from an airplane on reddit and they’re already starting to prepare the first arch for the deck installation.

Thanks for your updates ALC!
As of today, the 3rd arch is on the temporary perch awaiting mounting to the jacks. It’ll probably be a bit so the weather can improve before the precarious job of hoisting the arch can begin. The jack barge is still in position following the 2nd arch installation, so nothing has happened with that yet. This was done sometime this morning since the noon capture on the EarthCam shows the barge the arch arrived on is still on site.
Catenary pole installation continues to take place on the northern end and about 4 poles are needed to be installed before that end receives all their poles.
At Tonelle Avenue, they’ve been excavating the pit where the middle part of the bridge will go. Old pilings and retaining walls from phase 1 are being gradually chopped as the pit is deepened and new supporting structures were driven into place to keep the active roadway from collapsing.
A former MTA boss took control of the project.
Per this article, they mention utility relocation and some preliminary tunnel work to commence on a section of tunnel that extends to the actual river.
Among the initial undertakings set to start in the coming months is construction on a section of the new tubes from a bulkhead in the Hudson that will connect to the Hudson Yards concrete casing, all while protecting existing utilities and sewer lines.
It’s happening. The 3rd arch is in the process of being installed.
From earlier this morning: the arch is being loaded onto the jacking barge.
Overnight and into the morning they’ve jacked the third arch up and unlike the end spans, it seems like they went a bit higher than the pillars to ensure the arch fits and can be aligned since there is no room to slide the arch in as they did with the others. By tomorrow the arch should be installed.
Update: Within 2 hours of this post, they’ve floated the arch into place and the 3rd arch is almost fully installed. They just have to lower the jacks and it’s in place. No time wasted at all.
They’ll have it installed by the time it gets dark.
At this point at 11:30 PM, the arch is installed and the barge has since been disconnected from the arch and the jacks are being dismantled.
The sun and clouds just vibin for this installation. Beautiful pics.
I appreciate the close-up look on the NYC side of things. You can see they’re getting quite deep with the excavation of the tunnel casing.
Somebody explained what those pipes are but I forgot.
Looks like its some kind of bracing so nothing caves in. I’m sure someone more educated on construction has a better answer.
The tubes say “Trench Safety” and I did manage to find other instances of similar pipes being used so that’s what they’re for.
The pipes support the retaining walls holding back the sides of the trench from collapsing during construction. They will be removed when the project is finishing up and ground level is restored
