Awesome! I actually can’t wait for this to join the skyline. It’s not a grand design, but the height is pretty dominant for Lower Manhattan

Its a very nice tower. The crown echoes the WFC’s stepbacks

I’ll wait until it’s finished before I call the top ugly, but the base is really cool. Will be a huge improvement over the old parking garage/jungle.

Reminds me a bit of the lower floors of the Jenga Building at 56 Leonard.

In looking at streetview of this area I noticed that there used to be a pedestrian plaza right in front of this site. It opened around June 2013 and closed at some point in early 2015 based on satellite imagery.

2013:

2023:

What a shame that the city caved to the usual nonsense concerns over traffic and parking and removed this public amenity. Hopefully this can be restored one day.

“Greenwich St. was never meant for this kind of traffic,” said Eric Hazard, a nearby resident who said closing of an alternate route on Washington St. created “a gigantic congestion zone centered at Greenwich St.”

He said it had increased vehicular traffic in front of his building on Greenwich St., made it more dangerous for pedestrians and removed needed parking spaces for area residents.

Most of FiDi needs to be pedestrianized! Should’ve happened years ago! SO frustrating!

Wonder if Mamdani will manage to speed things up, or if it will be more of the same.

They did a similar thing in the late 90s, but on the stretch between Barclay-Vesey and the old WTC7. It was destroyed on 9/11 and they restored the street when new 7 rose.

(I’ve seen the southernmost part of the street labeled as ‘Western Union International Plaza’ on some older maps too, but the name didn’t stick. Not sure if it was ever actually pedestrianized)

Might as well just put Washington Street out of its misery at this point. The tunnel, WTC, and urban renewal demapped like 20 blocks worth of the street below Hubert. I’d imagine that caused a little more congestion than closing a street that only runs one more block in each direction.

Probably the least offensive Kaufman Building IMO

It’s not a Kaufman.

I think they were referring to 99 Washington St (which is a Kaufman), not this project.
