They’re working on making the site less of an eyesore .

A new architecture design studio based in Romania was hired for this project.

Rendering courtesy of BIG and Bucharest Studio.

They all wear sunglasses to protect themselves from the bright Balkan sun?

Idk. It looks sterile. So much potential for something interesting. Something dynamic. The cantilevered “PlayStation” looking building is cool. But those two glass blocks are just sterile.

This is gonna be Hudson Yards: The Sequel.

Good grief. The UN complex deserves much better neighbors.

Because there will not be a biotech complex, this site will now be discussed here:

I don’t know why people are treating this casino proposal as the final design.

I wish they’d just expand Tudor City, or make a Gothic City.

The tower designs by BIG for this project are absolutely ugly. I seriously hope someone else designs better alternatives. All of BIG’s NYC skyscraper proposals have been rather lackluster.

Agree, IMHO the kind of talent Ingels made his name on does not extend to skyscraper form. He’s not the only architect this can be said of, but for me, he’s the prime example. The proximity of this site to the UN deserves a design that’s going to be thoughtful and complimentary neighbor. This is not it.

Outsourcing the designs to an obscure Romanian design firm shows that “BIG” has questionable judgment?

Bucharest Studio is just doing the renderings and marketing materials, which is normal for a project this scale — e.g. Foster and Partners commonly outsource renderings to DBOX, but also to Shanghai-based ATChain and Gothenburg-based Tomorrow AB.

I feel like this project would be viable even without the casino if they included retail, dining and cultural programming into the hotel portion of the property.
