These laborers may not follow YIMBY, but treating people like they’re as disposable as construction waste is just wrong. A lot of these guys have trouble walking and they’re addicted to painkillers due to the toll of physical labor. It’s pretty horrific.
Thanks for the link to the article; and your raising awareness of a real ongoing issue in the construction trades.
These laborers may not follow YIMBY; but they can thank YIMBY for presenting interesting, and informative photos, links and commentary about the construction process and trade contractors.
The growing public awareness awareness of; foundation digging, reinforced concrete slabs, sheet metal studs, window casings, has been greatly enhanced by public forums like YIMBY.
The hope is there will also follow greater public awareness of the construction trades; and the people who actually construct these buildings.
Cheers to the construction trades and the ‘built environment’ in general.
Two big guys tying a strap to bespoke bags of rebar.
In the bags are small twisted pieces of rebar. The rebar in the bag look like they are used as some sort of connectors; perhaps for the long straight metal bars we typically see embedded in the concrete slab.
I am sure it is all rebar in those bags; because one of the big-guys in this photo told me so….
At long last we see a rendering revealing the final appearance of this new residential condo project.
Utility, Beauty and Solidity: the Vitruvian Triad Award is in order. I see nice work being done with a particularly important aspect of the triad, UTILITY: the west facing facade seems articulated in a way to maximizes the waterfront viewing, and there are plenty of no-mullion picture windows to further enhance those views, and the many small terraces with be a great feature to have on warm sunny days overlooking the Hudson River.
The BEAUTY is in the simple elegance; an Architectural design that is not over done - just well done.
The SOLIDITY is also somewhat apparent from viewing the many site photos on this thread: many good indicators of quality construction IMHO - particularly the work on the reinforced concrete superstructure.
I appreciate that architectural effort has been made, and the cladding materials seem nice. The building should not offend the eye, and since this is my neighborhood and I will walk past it with some regularity… well, ok. On the other hand, this is also going to be just another ludicrously expensive condo with boring, formulaic apartments for boring rich people on 11th Ave. It has fences and a gate. As such, it’s like many other buildings, and I don’t think it is likely to do much for the neighborhood or city.
Looks like a typical BKSK building, which generally look good, but they feel unresolved or unfinished. A lot of emphasis on the horizontal, not much on the vertical or apex. Like a good movie with a bad ending.
The weather is getting better. The shadows are getting shorter. The job site is getting warmer.
Great time of year for all the construction trades working on this building while exposed to the elements. Cheers to the trade contractors, superintendents, and project managers-great project.
Great time for random pedestrians to stop and get a curbside vantage point while viewing of all the fascinating construction activity.
