World Trade Center developer Larry A. Silverstein will be joined by more than 500 union construction workers, as well as a host of public officials, business leaders and representatives from the local community, to celebrate the topping out of 3 World Trade Center.

The last bucket of concrete for the 80-story skyscraper will be signed by Larry Silverstein and other dignitaries and lifted 1,079 feet to the top of 3 WTC. The tower is being constructed utilizing an innovative core-first method in which the concrete core is completed first, followed by the perimeter steel, which will reach the top later this year. The tower glass will be completed in 2017, and 3 WTC will open for business in 2018.

A historical day indeed!

The core of 3WTC is 290 feet lower than 1WTC. Those 290 feet make a big difference!

To compare, Nordstrom tower is going to be between 270 and 290 feet higher (including elevation) than 1WTC.

It sucks they didn’t raise the floor count and roof. They are banking on WTC2 to essentially be the “2nd” twin and depending on the angle, give it the twin tower look, but 2 WTC is a planning and financing disaster.

I gotta say, I am very happy with this tower though. It’s so nice.

So, today is the topping out for the concrete core…not the steel.

The tower is being constructed using a core-first method.

“We have reached the height with our concrete first & then we’ll reach again with steel,” said Sean Johnson, Vice President of Silverstein Properties.

very disappointing with the height cut, it looks barely taller than T4 and now with the increase in height to T2 with the new design the whole spiral thing is totally lost…besides Foster’s diamonds accentuated that effect
