I think the spec’d brick is handmade and has a heavy undulating texture, which would explain the rough appearance and cast shadows.

Must be the lighting but it only reads as handmade/handlaid over the head jambs. I’m sure in the full sun it looks fine and does not stand out from the rest of the brickwork
