So is the crown only tapered on the side facing the water?

Yes. Also the previous massing model showed 990 feet tall, so it got a 62 foot increase!

Awesome, I hadn’t seen those 3D models. If those statements from SOM and Howard Hughes are to be believed, this may not be the settled-on design, but it’s certainly eye-catching if it turns out to be.

I’m surprised this wasn’t posted here yet

Hope it gets built! those whiny South Street Seaporter people should move to Mystic, CT if they don’t like living in a city…

Well well well.

I think this was the right call. It blends in super well with the neighborhood. A tall one would have been awkward over here.

not surprising but sad… probably a foreshadowing of what will happen if Deblasio’s plan for soho/noho ever gets anywhere.

This is really disappointing. IMHO, these buildings fit right in with the many tall buildings that are across the street or within a block or two.

This was probably inevitable, though. Southbridge Towers is a huge complex brimming with aging condo owners who would have their river views reduced. Classic setup for a strong NIMBY pushback.

facepalm

and it’s so emblematic of how every single project goes in this city…start off grand, nimbys and “activists” get in, do their bitching and whining, and we get this on the flip side

to be fair, there is a second very popular modus operandi: start off grand, promise all sorts of shiny things, win the competition, value engineer to death and end up with the Hudson Yards

midtown east is the only saving grace of this city…moar evil banks please!
