It’s because they’re trying too hard. They already have 3 mediocre boxes, now is not the time to get creative.
At an art convention from today at the WTC, a 2wtc artwork was displayed, alongside a norman Foster quote.
From Michael Young’s IG story:
Seems like WTC 5 is added at that drawing… Start to wonder if WTC2 will ever rise. I was 14 at 9/11 when the towers went down and followed it’s rebirth from 2004-2006 on, all from across the pond that is. Every time I see an update in the ‘200 greenwich threads’ (also on similar forums) I wonder if there’s the news about it getting a go.
My favorit is still fosters first 2WTC design.
I don’t see 5wtc, this new design for 2wtc is surely interesting and unique. It’s just unfitting to me that when staring into the center of the new complex, a building full of holes will appear. In the past i’ve seen this design compared to a rubble piece of the old towers, which is hard to unsee for me too.
I hope they polish it a bit

Given the inclusion of both the Performing Arts Center by 1 WTC and 5 WTC, I highly suspect that this will be the final design.
Yes I was wrong, that’s not 5WTC, it’s the lower section of 4WTC that’s shaped diagonal.
I find this design better than the one from Bjark Ingels, that gave the impression of leaning towards 1WTC, plus the marquee of text was ugly.
I don’t get why Foster’s first design is so outdated that it had to be redesigned. And the current design on the drawing is also meant to house a bunch of space for greenery, not fitting in the rest of the complex imo.
Time will tell, if Larry doesn’t find an anchor tennant the current design might become outdated as well… That suggestion of building 2WTC on spec gave me hope but that was early 2019.
Ah, there we go! Also, I believe that tall tower on the right is 125 Greenwich
Yeah, that tall tower appears to be 125 Greenwich and after looking at the area, although it’s depicted as being quite thick in contrast to reality, it’s in the appropriate location and the right height.
Judging by the roof height of 3 WTC, the new design for 2wtc seems to be between 1200-1250ft, unless it’s just the perspective
Honestly, it now looks to be around 1,300 feet tall, but yes it could also be the perspective
The terraces line up with the leaked design from last year too
Words cannot describe how disappointed I am in this hanus monstrosity! Foster should be embarrassed! The whole WTC site has been a hack job with the exception of 4 WTC. Ugh!
It’s interesting seeing the context that this artwork is displayed in – Michael Young’s Instagram stories also show sketches of the Libeskind master plan, 4WTC with the original 2006 designs, St Nicholas Church, and the PATH Oculus:

With the format of each WTC building being represented by a design sketch by the architect, it would seem that the 2WTC sketch is directly from Norman Foster’s firm, and most likely current!
Yea, as we’ve seen in his post, Norman Foster has attached a quote to it. Now I only wonder when we get to see the official renderings. It’s been almost 2 years since we’ve discovered the leaks.
Spotted in VisualHouse’s website, is a screenshot from the tower’s proposed lobby, it lines up with the renders from late 2021.
This is blurry, but this render seems to show 5wtc, and the crown of 2WTC behind it.
Link to where I found it:
They were behind some of the leaked late 2021 renderings too, but according to the website’s context, they have created a CGI tour of the tower for marketing purposes.
Great finds! Odd they have a CG model of One WTC on the second rendering when the tower is nearly 10 years old
Pulled the gif from the site
It looks like the product being advertised is a service of providing fully 3D interactive models for developers to showcase buildings for propsective tenants, so all the images in the GIF are full CG renderings, including of existing buildings like 1WTC.
Figured that, just thought it was a composite shot of aerial footage with CG models (based on the texture of The Washington) but the low resolution doesn’t help
Now if only there was a big tennant in the pipeline and some actual news, like back in 2015. Soon another year passed, even at 9/11’s quarter century anniversary I think it will still be a painted eyesore between the streets while the money is there to let it rise…
Looking at the suggestion on similar forums about a recurring idea for a twin next to 1WTC as a replacement for 2WTC it makes me wonder if New York would’ve been better off by rebuilding the twin towers.Like in a new design that’s better, a bit taller and more save. I think the site and memorial would’ve been finished way before 2015 or even 2011.
But about that recurring topic, in my opinion a twin of 1WTC won’t work not with the design nor the position, that’s just my opinion. Maybe a tennant chooses Foster’s first design after all, I wonder if Silverstein offers/sells that design as well. Or is he just offering the tumbling tower from Bjark and the 2021 leak? 3 designs is better than 2.
.
A few days ago Silverstein admitted that the office market is facing a downturn. An LMDC document about tower 5 from late 2021, took a stand against a hotel in 5wtc, citing the plans for a 800 key hotel in 2wtc.
Apparently a hotel is planned for the tower given the office market’s hurdles, but they still have a lot of square feet of office to finance, and even VisualHouse’s fancy CGI tour isn’t doing the job…
But the tower’s sketch shown in that art convention last week gave me some hope, maybe it’ll happen soon.
