They already passed a rule that new cladding will be designed so birds can see it. Nothing they’re building these days would cause problems like the ones built a couple decades ago do
The proposal to replace the Hyatt obviously is a big deal. It’s an important site and a huge building. The reactions on this forum have been positive, negative, and in between. My typical reaction to new important proposals is wait and see and that’s my feeling here too. Early drawings always change and the actual building constructed often looks quite different from the renderings. This one looks very intriguing but, as usual for me, I’ll wait to see what happens in real life to make a judgment. I’ve been surprised too often–both positively and negatively–when I judge too early. In any case, this is one to watch for sure.
Hoping they stick to their guns and don’t butcher this down to mediocrity. But 2030 is such a long way off, a lot can happen.
You forgot all the mechanicals and the big concrete elevator shaft
Oooh, no, not that. LOL

Pardon my candor, but all American cities utterly pale in comparison to New York.
Controversial Design Unveiled for a New Supertall by SOM in New York | 2021-02-08 | Architectural Record
I expected better from Architectural Record. That article has a clickbait headline and is filled with NIMBY quotes. If they’re going to quote a bunch of the project’s opponents they should have at least tried to be balanced and covered all of the myriad ways this tower is respectful of its context.
Non-YIMBY architectural press almost exclusively employs brain-dead writers who would wish no new buildings are ever built.
I don’t mind them quoting NIMBYs, but it should be balanced. If they quote a NIMBY saying GCT is going to be boxed in, then they should also quote an SOM architect about how the new tower will actually open up views to GCT. Provide a point and a counterpoint. But you’re right, architectural journalism in general is in a pretty dire state.
I agree. I don’t expect any architectural press to remotely approach the quality of Yimby. This is the NY Times and BBC of real estate news.
Boxy, unimaginative on the outside, probably much more interesting on the inside (like Twix) elevated public open spaces, shopping, eating, connections with surrounding areas. Asia has better architecture, unfortunately for NYC.
