That damage is quite superficial and seems like something that can be repaired in due time; they good news in no one got hurt - they really got lucky.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a supply chain resupply problem that results in a somewhat lengthy delay.
I’m sure everyone noticed the strong frontal storm that blew through. There’s another report of debris at 57th and 6th, aka this tower.
Streets are blocked off in Midtown due to falling debris. FDNY responded to the scene on 57th Street and 6th Ave. As a result, F Trains are bypassing 57th St. in both directions.
edit: confirmation
Damn is this from damaged pieces from the previous incident or new stuff? Kinda getting careless at this point.
I wouldn’t blame the builders too much— in these kinds of winds it’s almost impossible to tie everything down enough. At that height the winds are extremely forceful— the best thing is for this project to be wrapped up and the envelope completed. Until then, there are bound to be some loose parts
I disagree. Of all the construction sites in the city, this one should have been extra-careful about anything that could potentially fly loose in high winds. I would not be surprised to see the city come down hard on these guys for letting it happen again so quickly, if that is indeed what happened. It’s extremely dangerous; people could be killed. If this kind of incident is truly inevitable with such projects, the city will just stop letting developers build buildings like this. I don’t think it’s inevitable.
Virtually every building this tall has had bad accidents, so if you’re right then they should stop building them. It is only recently that they have been building such towers, after all. This is the thinnest high rise in the world, there is not much precedent here. They spend a long time preparing towers in Asia under construction for monsoon season, but here storms come with fairly little warning…
If the photos from this article are right it does pretty much confirm more than just the crown will need pieces replaced. Those broken windows in the shots from the crane operator’s Instagram may have broken or broken glass that hadn’t been cleaned may have fallen due to the winds yesterday.
I think we’ll have to still wait and see on the true of the damage/repairs needed. It seems like the crane was secured and no incident happened with the crane despite those severe winds yesterday. I haven’t been able to find any footage / reports of the crane acting awry.
This building is unbelievably intricate and is an extreme engineering feat – so one can only wonder what the timeline is to replace these parts. Hopefully this is the last of the safety incidents – as it was shaping up extraordinarily well before the weather took a turn.
There are no distinct photos of the damage that I can find: so who knows what happened with that additional debris.
I don’t know if that wide rectangular section of raw concrete on the crown is the result of damage, or has been left open as the anchor arms for the crane. The damage would not have been that clean edged; so my guess it is part of the crane process of securing the braces to the building.
From earlier in the thread there is a still image of what appears to be a shattered window:
The other stills in the images taken from footage of the crane operators during the inspection are of pieces of crown debris and what appears to be scattered wreckage scattered on the setback and elsewhere
The interiors are nearly complete as they put the finishing touches on the exterior; there are now many photos available on-line.
This photo gives a clear look at the floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, windows. I like the simple interior buildout and the recessed pocket for window blinds, shades or curtains.
Is there any video footage of the entrance lobby or public spaces yet? I believe all I’ve seen so far were images or renderings.
This is the only video tour that includes the interior views, I could not find any others: may have been posted before.
