No great losses here. Kind of sucks they’re tearing down dense housing for more engineering classrooms though. While the engineering department as-is is pretty shabby it’s also already bigger than it really needs to be. I guess they’re planning to expand but it’s a weird project that seems to be more about prestige.
NEW HAVEN — City officials, development leaders, and community stakeholders gathered Tuesday, July 29 to celebrate the grand opening of the $50 million Cadence on Canal residential development. It brings 176 new units to the Dixwell neighborhood.
The five-story complex, located at 222 Canal St., transforms a long-vacant, city-owned 1.7-acre parcel into a vibrant housing community situated along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. The site, once home to Winchester Arms and Olin Corp., now stands as a marker of neighborhood reinvestment and a shared vision for a more connected, forward-looking New Haven.

There’s no way that’s happening.
Woodbridge is one of the wealthiest towns in New Haven County and has virtually limitless financial, legal, media and political resources to ensure this is never built.

Some steps in the right direction for New Haven Green:
$4M OK’d For Green Overhaul | New Haven Independent
City Engineer Giovanni Zinn outlined specific intentions for the $4 million in a cover letter to alders. He wrote that the grant will fund raised intersections and raised crosswalks at eight locations around the perimeter of the Green, as well as a transformation of the stretch of Temple Street that crosses the Green into a pedestrian-friendly walkway that will still be able to accommodate cars.
Why?
A woonerf is a ridiculous idea for the New Haven Green.
They should just keep it as a regular street or make it a pedestrian pathway.
Nobody wants a confusing woonerf bifurcating a public park.
No doubt this section of Temple should be completely pedestrianized, but a reduction from three lanes to one narrow lane is still a good outcome for an American city. Surely it can also be more easily pedestrianized later on.
Also a fan of the raised crosswalks at every intersection around the Green.
