No more squinting at a cell phone pic of a crude scale model of the recently-announced McCormick Place Marriott Marquis— Gensler has generated the first computer renderings with practical perspectives for the 1,200-room McPier-guided hospitality project meant to revitalize an already-recovering part of town. By our count, the seductive shard of a tower will top out at about 50 stories with a jagged, etherial podium extending west. Some manner of active green space—hopefully with public access—is plopped atop the podium. Another amenity space looks to be cut into the tower’s upper floors— a gaping mouth of at least three stories’ height and considerable width (we’re thinking pool). The McPier authority awarded Marriott the operating contract on Friday, moving the McCormick area toward a two-hotel chain town (with Hyatt).
