The South Bend River Lights is a popular place to visit, but soon it will be a popular place to live. The land at 320 East Colfax will soon be the home of new condominiums in just over a year and a half.
Three Twenty at the Cascade is what developers are ready to build to refine urban living in the downtown.
On Monday, NewsCenter 16 got a sneak peek of the rendering of the 38.5 million dollar development along the St. Joseph River overlooking the Century Center dam.
Plans eventually call for two, seven story towers on the East Bank. The first building will have 17 condos with a penthouse priced at over a million dollars.
“Many baby boomers are empty nesters now, they’re looking at their large suburban home and they don’t want to give up the spaciousness and the lifestyle, but they don’t need the yard people that are moving into an urban setting,” said Tom Panzica of the Three Twenty at the Cascade. “They can walk and bike to restaurants and galleries and theaters and things of that nature, and South Bend offers all of that.”
Groundbreaking for The Cascade is planned for Tuesday at 3:20 p.m. for the first building. It should be complete by fall of 2019.
Work on the second building won’t start until 2021.
The city has planned to give five million dollars toward the project. The redevelopment commission recently committed the funding with potential limited tax abatements for future commercial uses.
