I remember when 1 Astor Plaza (to the Torch’s immediate right in bkhight’s shot) stood completely alone in that part of Midtown. It certainly must’ve been considered avant garde for its time. So it now has company for sure.

From this past Monday. They’ve dropped off the 2 side setbacks and are already into the last volume before the stem portion begins.

Im under the opinion this wouldve been a very interesting building if theyd had kept the original design. Considering they still havent dropped new renderings, theres some small hope it could still change or look better than depicted

I’m out of the loop. Is what is built so far look like the original renderings? Will we not be able to tell if there are significant changes until we get to the “neck”?

Relative to the renders that exist for the initial version, yes, the building looks like same for the podium and actual hotel portion. Its just everything above where they are currently working that is different starting with the removal of the slope on the top of the main portion of the building.
Renders may never be released for the updated version, that’s something that isn’t always done when projects change.
The original renderings basically showed what the original pre-redesign zoning diagram showed, there’s no reason to believe that any “new” renders would appear different relative to the new bad zoning diagram based on that connection.

What a disaster.
It looks like the tower was specifically designed for routine opening of the Containment Unit releasing captured ghosts into the Manhattan sky.
