how is demo going?

I guess I will be able to check in a few week since grand central will be the primary station we use from our hotel…

Demo is really picking up. I think that the buildings will be gone by the end of this year.

How long will you be in NYC for? Where are you staying?

this will be an iconic crown

just 2 nights. Spending friday evening and all day sat, flying out sunday.

Hilton Midtown East. So we will be using Grand Central to go see the Met Saturday morning, and probably to get to JFK on Sunday. We will probably just walk from Hotel to Rockefeller center/ Times Square Friday night.

You should walk. It’s a great walk up Fifth.

To get to JFK, you can take a bus from near GC or the LIRR one stop to Jamaica and then switch to the Air Train.

last time I was in NY I think I took the E line from Penn Station back to the Airport. I think I will have to go north 1 stop from GC Station and then catch the same line. Not too worried flight is at like 2 pm. Checkup around 10 or 11. I recall the Airtrain being really slow. Getting around JFK was a pain (switching terminals).

That’s correct. You can take the 6 from GCT to 51st and switch to the E. At Jamaica, you get the Air Train which expresses to JFK. The LIRR goes express to Jsmaica. The air train is quick.

I think your hotel is near 51st and Lex, so you can skip GCT.

for comparison this was posted by another user on 30 April close to same angle as your pic.

thinking that it could be done in 2-3 months if it maintains the same rate.

I really liked these two shots for comparison you two posted!
And I agree tokilamockingbrd, at this slow rate of demolition, just like it happened with the Deutsche Bank Building at 130 Liberty Street, it’ll take months to be fully gone and to begin the first steps to build One Vanderbilt!

is it slow? This a pretty large building they are demoing. It lost 1/3 of its height in a month+7 days. And I would assume what is left standing is more or less gutted now so it could go quicker. I am thinking demo will be done by September, site prep begins and around this time next year its starts rising. That would put it on track for a late 2020 opening or early 2021.

Really? My mistake, tokilamockingbrd! Never mind about the “slow rate” I wrote!
Guess I was anxious to see this demolition complete!

And those are good estimates of its opening year, hope it won’t have delays and takes longer than it should.

I don’t know it might be slow. It is one of the bigger demo sites I have seen. Some of the smaller ones seem to take a while.

What I don’t know is how long the prep work will take. I hope they are working on the GC station upgrade already but that might not be possible.

I agree, Atticus Finch.

I observed with the large building on W 30th that HFZ is demolishing that it takes a lot longer , for some reason, to demolish the upper floors. Once they’re gone, the pace really expedites.
