Kings Theater, Brooklyn Paramount, Coney Island Amphitheater… just a few in Brooklyn off the top of my head.
Beacon and Carnegie are more concert venues. Radio City is similar capacity but MSG can also host event type entertainment.
The MSG Theater is a pretty traditional theater setup last time I was there. Genuinely curious: how is it used for events?
Long story short, the theater needs to get the boot so penn can be opened up a bit. I’m totally on board with a MSG reskin or even reconstruction in place if thats what it will take.
I only worked there a couple of times but it has advantages with wing space, fly space and the loading dock. Modern construction. The Shed is good but it’s not much bigger than the Gershwin. Lincoln Center works this way but booking can be tight.
I really liked this design (ASTM proposal).
The West Side yards is perfect; you don’t have to tear anything down so that speeds up the timeline. A facility there could tie in nicely with the Jacob Javits Center, moving the ferry terminal to 33rd street would be a big help.
The Dolans aren’t moving MSG to the west side, the 7 train alone cannot handle the traffic it would create. Also who is paying Related to forgo building thousands of residential units and offices for an arena? Once upon a time I always envisioned a new area built on the piers but in practice it doesn’t make sense since there is virtually zero mass transit over there. MSG currently has direct access to NJT, Amtrak, LIRR, 1,2,3,A,C,E. They would be fools to move if we are being completely honest.
In the long run it’s not MSG’s decision.
I used to dream of what could be if MSG moved, but I’ve come around to not letting perfect be the enemy of good. The arena isn’t the primary factor in improving operational efficiency. There are a handful of good plans that remove the theater and allow the arena to coexist with a non-oppressive, modern transit hall. It’s the only option that seems likely to generate the political will and capital needed in this generation.
I agree with you. It’s the most feasible plan that allows all parties to have a “win”.
