Arch Update:
They wasted no time and through the night into the morning here we are: The first arch is being mounted onto the bridge. It is currently halfway into position as it seems that temporary structure is going to be used to help slide it into place.
Great to know that we can still build like this!
There are some nice close-ups of the equipment used to raise and move the arch in this article.
The arch has been set into place and the jacks are being taken down. Absolutely amazing progress overall on the site.
Satellite imagery:
With the arch in place, there hasn’t been much development on that end. The site’s been pretty quiet. The jack is fully dismantled for now and the arch is secure and in place.
On the southern half of the bridge, railings are being installed.
The northern half is receiving signal equipment and other infrastructure.
I checked the satellite but cloud cover made it hard to see whats going on at Coeymans, unfortunately.
That video has a nice view of what I saw via satellite at Coeymans. All 3 arches appear to be largely complete - looks like they’re working on the structure of Arch 3 and going to install the cables. Arch No. 2 is just about ready to go. Nice find.
As the Tonnelle Avenue bridge project progresses into the next phase, a new temporary pedestrian path is being set up to permit work to continue. No photos, sadly.
Some really bad pics of the completed span beams supporting the Highline, they’ve also built some new temporary roadways in/out of the site.
The curved roadway has been there for at least a week or two now although the one under the Highline is new. It looks like they put some gravel for better drainage when it rains (or it could be concrete?). It’s nice to see visible progress on the NYC side.
Here’s a view from the site EarthCam:
After about a month of downtime, the Tonnelle Ave live cam has been restored.
Here’s the latest progress. There is an actual bridge deck now and it looks like fill is being put in the cavity behind the retaining wall closest to the camera. The other side appears to be already filled. Hopefully, in the coming months, that segment will be finished with the other segments well underway.
The temporary pedestrian overpass is also visible:
Contracts were awarded for the replacement of the Sawtooth Bridges. This is part of the gateway program and will add two more tracks to that portion of the NEC.
The Tonelle Ave project is making good progress. The side closest to the camera is now half-filled with fill, and it looks like drainage infrastructure is being installed. The furthest side to the camera is filled in completely and is already being paved with asphalt. Rebar is being placed on the bridge deck, which makes me suspect a layer of concrete for the road surface will be laid for the actual road surface. Molds are also being set up to allow for the wall to be cast.
Portal Bridge construction is slowing down with the holidays approaching and no major noticeable work has been conducted. The majority of the observable work includes installing signal infrastructure on the northern half and railings on the southern side.
I wonder how far off the Tonelle bridge project is from shifting car traffic to the portion that’s currently under construction
Not terribly far off. Perhaps within a month or two .
Looks like it’s for the actual road surface that cars drive on. The layer they’re putting down is at the same level as the actual street. They’re also pouring concrete for the bridge railing over the trackbed.
This source states that in mid to late January, the second arch will be floated down to the bridge site. It is worth noting that it is the only source I could find (I may update this if find more) that gives an actual timeframe of when the next one will be shipped. It however isn’t an impossibility given the second arch is practically ready to be shipped.
