The building where Mr. Hawley lived, constructed in 1900, is owned by 642 East 14th St. LLC. He said in the days and weeks that followed his displacement, communication from the head officer of that LLC, Jack Lebewohl, felt scant — a sentiment echoed by his neighbors. “We didn’t hear from our landlord other than to tell us we couldn’t go in the building,” said Lindsey Ganey, 30, who lived downstairs from Mr. Hawley.
The landlord, seeing a different future for the property, filed for a permit to demolish the building. “These tenants will never be moving back into this building,” said Adam Leitman Bailey, who is president of the law firm representing the landlords. “This is a building that needs to be demolished.”

That’s a lot of people that suddenly became homeless. Imagine trying to recover from that.
