Biondi and the Ames School Buildings at the former Rising Ground property on Hawthorne Street. In partnership with Great Point Studios, owner and operator of the new Lionsgate Studio Yonkers, the 100,000 square foot property will be the future home to Yonkers Public Schools’ new media and production magnet school. In its new incarnation, the school, which currently houses the social services organization Rising Ground, will enroll approximately 500 students from Grades 6 to 12 and focus primarily on media and the performing arts. The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, will be involved in developing the curriculum, which will ultimately provide a channel for students to apply and potentially attend Syracuse University. The yet-to-be-named school is expected to open in 2024 and Great Point Studios will manage the renovations and buildouts on behalf of the City of Yonkers. Here is a recent photo of the Power Plant Building. There has been no new reports on this adaptive reuse project in some time now; the silence is deafening. The waterfront real estate development boom along the Yonkers waterfront is going strong: some plan must have been put in place by now. Indeed! taking all the windows out was also colossally stupid given its been exposed to the weather for multiple winters now… Doesn’t this developer also own some decommissioned women’s prison in the west village that is equally stalled? ---

This same developer is (or was) involved with the Chelsea Prison project. The women’s prison building is another architectural gem. It seems to be uninhabited, or under utilized - this was a lost opportunity. The problem with the Power Plant building seems to be stalled also; and the news on the current status remains unknown to public. These are all private real estate developements: so they are well within their rights to keep the project details behind closed doors… 😉 ---
