It gives me Foster’s original WTC2 vibes.
Apparently this plan was revealed in August 1986
And here’s an architectural model based on the sketch posted above
While we’re on the subject of planned or visionary megatalls from the 80s, here are two more.
New York - East River Landing Masterplan
On this area should be a megatall of 591 meters and between 140 and 150 floors.
The building site is 60 meters below the water level of the East River, on this rock would be anchored the concrete foundations for the supports and the core.
Another visionary concept (Braced Towers) envisages building four skyscrapers between 600 and 800 meters in Manhattan.
The four towers would be connected by several bridges, which on the one hand deflect the vertical forces (wind load) sideways into the towers horizontally.

I love how with 3d modeling we can revive projects that weren’t made or drastically changed. Thats why I made my Liberty Place models
What courthouse actually stands on this property today?
This tower somehow reminds of the aborted Sun Building project from 1890 and the Indian Monument that was not built either.
If you want to know more about the architecture competition, I have a total of one or five newspaper articles in my collection.
I dont believe there’s any courthouse, or building for that matter, on that site. I’m pretty sure that’s Foley Square now. The streets on the plan have just been altered beyond recognition. That or the plan shows a change in the street layouts. A small portion of the NY county Supreme court building is in what wouldve been the site.
why wasn’t it built that way?
The Shops at Liberty Place, the hotel, and 2 Liberty Place changed dramatically in 1987 after 2 Liberty’s anchor tenant requested a lot more space inside 2 Liberty Place. As for the shops, I thing they were value engineered to save money for 2 Liberty. I should also mention that when the chunky 2 Liberty Place was first revealed, it had more stone cladding at the top to tie One and Two Liberty together. But in the end, the top of 2 Liberty was value engineered as well
I imagine that their South Ferry project wouldve looked nice, all of KPF’s post modern buildings are beautiful, like Mellon Bank in Philly (hard to imagine it was supposed to be taller) and Tower 57 in NYC.
Wow! I have NOT seen those images of Mellon Bank Center! I always wondered if they wanted a spire, from Spring Garden Street Bridge the spire of One Liberty aligns with the pyramid of Mellon. @Mackensen is this from a different KPF book?
South Ferry plaza would have been a fantastic postmodern build.
The proposal as a rendering by Helmut Jahn compared to that of KPF.
