NEWARK, NJ | Riverfront Square Megaproject | 12 ACRES | Mixed Use

No, JC is a hotbed of development. Newark’s development sputters and burps its way along, a project here and a project stillborn there. Even this Bears Stadium project, just a 2-minute walk to trains to NYC and the Hudson Waterfront, can’t move forward. Very depressing.

To be fair, Newark’s development is more consistent than it might seem. It’s just not dominated by large, multi-tower projects like you see in Jersey City.

As part of my job, I review Newark’s zoning board agendas every week, and there’s a steady stream of low- to mid-rise projects happening across the city.

And while some of the bigger, flashier developments haven’t seen much recent activity, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re dead. Many of them are just stalled in the planning or financing stages. I wouldn’t be surprised if a version of this project moves forward within the next couple of years.

How long has the former Westinghouse factory site abutting the Broad Street train station sat vacant? It’s been at least 15 years since the factory was razed. It looked like redevelopment was finally coming to that area when Rutgers moved into the former NJ Bell building but nothing happened.

Crickets…what we have here is another weed-filled lot where a transformational redevelopment of Bears Stadium was promised at a ground-breaking ceremony years ago. The Star Ledger turns a blind eye to another broken promise to residents of Newark.
