Not mom coming in to tell the kids to stop fighting.
Hochul has been relatively pro getting stuff done when it comes to transit and she wants to add Penn to the SAS and IBX as one of her achievements before the election this fall. I can’t overstate how refreshing it is to have Albany take responsibility for the MTA because under Cuomo he acted like he didn’t control it.
It was, at least according to the say-so of my dissertation advisor. Once when I bemoaned the station’s demise, he was quick to point out how grimy it had become in its final years. This photo, and some other later day photos I’ve seen, would seem to back him up.
Grand Central was no better, in terms of appearance, either. Decades of buildings burning coal for heat and unchecked air pollution surely did a number on many buildings. On the inside, soot from cigarette smoke would do the same as well.
If you know where to look, you can see a small piece of just how dirty Grand Central was on the ceiling prior to its restoration in the 1990s.
Oh yes, the vagaries of GCT I am familiar with firsthand, since, happily, it survived into my timeline. (Thanks Jackie and friends!) Although to be honest, its pre-renovation grime did little to dampen my younger self’s enthusiasm. I suspect the same would have been true of Penn if I had been lucky enough to experience it!
Photo of the forgotten project to add Metro North stations in the Bronx for purposes of Westchester/Connecticut regional-rail service to Pennsylvania Station.
For the purpose of connecting communities in the East Bronx with direct access to Penn Station without having to take the subway. Co-op City currently does not have direct access to manhattan via a subway line so this will be a game changer. I grew up in Parkchester which has an express stop via the 6 Line, but this new route would cut the travel time to Midtown in half.
Yeah, the disconnect is pretty bad even without the Hutch being a horrible barrier. You’ve got all of Bay Plaza, a horrible car-centric shopping center with seas of parking lots, the no man’s land behind it next to the Hutch, and then even if you can cross ot, which you can’t, there’s still a walk to the tracks. Most PSA users will likely take the bus from the residential tower areas to the station. What is needed of course is the extension of the Concourse Line.
