This is great and long overdue. There is no world in which Park Avenue N should be an 8 lane highway running through the busiest office corridor in the city. I hope Park Avenue S will subsequently get the same treatment.

> Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the NYC DOT hope to add greenery, public seating, bike infrastructure, and safer crossings to the avenue by eliminating two travel lanes.

| Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the NYC DOT are unveiling potential redesigns that seek to revitalize and beautify Park Avenue while improving safety for the community.

A redesign was proposed years ago and would transform the avenue between East 46th Street and East 57th Street, with the aim of making the space greener and safer for all.

The redesign aims to balance the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. It would remove one travel lane in each direction, expanding medians to accommodate seating, plantings and other pedestrian and cycling amenities. This includes bike lanes and other street features. |

Quote:

| “We are putting the ‘Park’ back into Park Avenue and upgrading Midtown Manhattan by providing residents and visitors alike with more usable public space,” said Mayor Mamdani.

“Our city’s public spaces must better serve the public, and my administration has made this a priority through bold infrastructure investments and street redesigns … we will ensure that New York City’s streets are the envy of the world,” he added.

As the MTA strives to waterproof and replace sections of the shed structure, Mamdani’s administration is looking to take advantage of the moment by redefining the public space above.

New York City is also seeking community input to shape decision making.

“By upgrading the medians and seating, Park Avenue will finally, truly belong to the public. The Mamdani Administration will keep pushing to make our streets safer and more accessible for all New Yorkers,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Julia Kerson. |

How will they prevent cars from blocking each zebra crossing connecting the medians on different blocks?

this view showing an unobstructed pedestrian crossing is unrealistic

> ”The road is crazy wide,” he said, adding that a single vehicle lane in either direction should be sufficient. He also said the city should remove traffic intersections along the proposed green space, otherwise the space would be divided by cars that tend to bunch up near crosswalks.
>
> “The cars will block this ‘park’ on Park,” he said.

He’s not wrong, although creating a north-south barrier on each east-west street in Midtown would lead to severe traffic chaos.

In practice, each block will function as its own separate park, and north-south continuity will likely be difficult to achieve in a pleasant manner.

most of those crosswalks will definitely be blocked for turning vehicles when it’s time for pedestrians to move north/south through the park sections, but that’s not too big a deal imo.
