Brooklyn Bridge @ New York by robertaruchiga, on Flickr
If only the rest of the tower were as edgy as the podium base (scroll up a few posts to see that).
It’s not a bad tower but it’s fairly anonymous for such a prominent, iconic location. This building looks like it could’ve been built anywhere: Long Island City, Las Vegas, Toronto. I would’ve preferred a tower that related contextually with its surroundings. For example, a skilled architect could incorporate some gothic details to reference the Manhattan bridge.
DeSelby–You hit the nail on the head. This is a boring tower, especially given its location by the bridge. Any good architect, which the actual designer is not, would have taken at least some cues from the bridge in making the design. And the podium, while perhaps interesting, is out of sync with both the tower and the bridge. In its context the base is odd. A great opportunity has been missed.

I ran past here the other day. The side of the podium facing the river is hideous at street level. If you’re out enjoying the waterfront, you turn around and …it looks like someone plopped a prison there.
It’s such a shame that they made such an obvious “back” to the building at street level, and made it face the waterfront.
