NEW YORK | JFK Airport Renovation/Upgrades

You’re right about that reconfiguration need. This was actually part of the scope in the pre-pandemic plan (as well as a slightly larger headhouse), but it was removed following the restructuring.

I’m sick of a lot of new builds (not just this airport) having ugly, unfinished-looking ceilings. I guess cuz everyones on their phones they don’t look up but i do and it’s so annoying seeing a nice interior topped with a ceiling full of wires and beams

Apparent confirmation that T1 and T6 are behind schedule, but still expected to open this year. Even a bit of light trash talk with the head of the roadways/GTC project, who says their work will be done on time:joy:

There was also a comment about T4’s arrivals hall being done in December. I wasn’t aware of work being done on that, so I’ll have to keep an eye out.

"David Tullis of Skanska said their parking garages, ramps and bridges are proceeding nicely.

“We do the boring part of airports — like underground utilities. And there are miles of them.”

And, he said, in some good-natured trash talk to the other presenters, “We’ll be finished on time.”

Jennifer Aument, the CEO of The New Terminal 1 project, said work there is about 90 percent complete, and it will be the largest terminal at JFK when finished. She said the carriers it will serve are as diverse as Queens itself.

“There are people who call Queens home,” Aument said. “But some also call their first or second home a country represented by our airlines.” And Aument wasn’t bothered by Tullis’ timeline remark.

“If I was building a driveway like that …” she said.

Steve Thody, CEO Of JFK Millennium Partners, which is rebuilding Terminal 6, also chimed in.

“We’re 91 percent complete,” Thody deadpanned.

That project is being built in two phases on the sites of Terminal 6 and the present Terminal 7. He said the baggage systems and checkpoints in phase 1 recently passed muster with the Transportation Safety Administration. Terminal 7 will be shut down and torn down later this year to begin phase 2.

Representatives of the JFKIAT, which is partnering with Delta Air Lines on the new Terminal 4 project, expect the new international arrivals terminal to open in December."

I didn’t see that coming. Also, i don’t see any work being done. Haven’t seen any renderings either. Interesting.

This is only tangentially related but is it maybe true that construction on the Van Wyck should be done this year? I know this is an eternal joke in NYC as there really has been various constructions projects on the Van Wyck since the 90s but maybe someone better plugged in can clarify if this is fake news or not - This article is from a few weeks ago:

I know exactly what you mean. The highway had a pretty continuous construction phase until ~2018, which was around the time they planned this latest scope of work to add a lane in each direction. Should the project wrap in September, this would indeed mark the end of major construction on the VWE for a while!

Aerial photo of T1, I’d say from around a month ago.

This is an amazing pic.

A massive chunk of the old T1 can fit in the new T1 headhouse. It’s huge.

The PANYNJ just recently released photos of the redeveloped commercial space in T8.

Thanks for sharing! Am I the only one who’s actually quite impressed by the way this turned out?

It’s nice, but the rest of the terminal is dumpy.

Only parts of it such as this looks good. The rest of the terminal looks pretty dated still.

Found some more construction photos from T1. The exterior is looking good, but I remain surprised by the lack of visible progress on the airside retail/dining hall.

what’s taking them so long i feel like they have been done with outside work bc it looks the same as 1 year ago atp i feel like phase 1 will be completed by 2030. Phase 2 will be done 10 years later.

Interior work tends to take just as long - if not longer - than exterior

Doesn’t look like this will open over the summer, more likely the fall or winter. I’m sure they got a whole lot more testing to do.
