NEW YORK | JFK Airport Renovation/Upgrades

The Port Authority is known for its penny pinching, no way they’re building something grand like that in NYC.

T1 did a promo film with video versions of a bunch of its renders. #anewjfk #likenoother | The New Terminal One at JFK

Most of them we’ve seen before, but there was a shot of the headhouse’s dining hall, shot from the perspective of walking toward the Phase B gates (I think). Lighting makes the space look kinda weird but I’m fairly certain it’s just a rendering issue.

T1 has a new “By New York, For The World” magazine, linked below, which featured a cool conceptual sketch of the terminal from Gensler. Interestingly, the sketch features the original garage configuration, when getting to it wouldn’t have required crossing over half the airport via open-air bridge.

I rode in a Waymo in LA recently…in <5 years your car will drop you off and drive itself to the garage…if anyone even owns a personal vehicle by then.

A nice idea, but until then, I can’t imagine the passengers at this world class terminal will enjoy the extended bridge walk during frigid winters or sweltering summers…no matter how many food trucks they cram onto it.

I’m more worried about the pouring rain or snow. At least it’ll be tolerable when it’s dry out, but add rain, snow and wind to the mix, and it’ll really suck.

These pictures may be a little old, but I found an update on the GTC. Supports for the maligned pedestrian bridge are in place, and in the second picture you can see some of the wooden finishes being installed. Based on that second picture, it looks like 5 more structural bays need to be erected.

Great update, but my god, the GTC is a disappointment. The PA has neutered that thing so badly.

doesn’t this belong in the Port Authority Bus Terminal renovation thread?

No? This is JFK T1

They should have had covered paths for the climate. PA is spending so much money yet doing thing half baked.

The paths will have a glass/etfe cover to protect from rain and snow, but the temperature and wind remains an issue.

oh,

so this is the design of a world-class airport in the best city in the world??

mah bad

A lucky journalist got to visit T6. Here’s a photo from the article showing progress. The departure roadway is almost ready to be paved and cladding on the facade continues to progress.

If nothing else, at least T1’s parking bridge will offer spectacular skyline views to those leaving the city. Steel erection has already begun!

Finally had a good reason get down to JFK this past Saturday. I managed get a pretty good look at the construction, too!

At Terminal One, it was great to see the interior in-person through the glass, especially at night. More landscaping work is underway at the arrival plaza, mainly involving the placement of boulders, and work on the canopies seems to be nearing completion. The bridge to the garage is progressing nicely, while the garage itself continues to take shape. Multiple prefab concrete units were visible waiting to be installed.

I spent a bit of time at Terminal 6, and found a few areas of note. I’m quite certain the new Terminal 5 egress roadways will not be ready this month, as previously indicated, as there’s quite a bit of pouring left to do. Progress is evident, however, as the exit from the T5 departures curb is currently being rerouted onto the roof of the international baggage hall while permanent replacement of the original off-ramp is executed. I’m guessing the new road could be activated sometime in early-to-mid January. I noticed as well that the T5 arrival egress roadways ramps up to the elevated departures egress structure, allowing for T6’s arrivals plaza to be unobstructed. I’m looking forward to seeing that space finished!

T6 itself is progressing nicely, with concrete for the departures road poured and most of the bridges to the check-in hall installed. I noticed the first pieces of the elegant curbside canopy being installed; interestingly, they’re starting on the phase 2 part of the curb and working backwards! The bridge linking the T5 and T7 garages appears to have all its steel installed; I’m predicting it could open in late winter/early spring. I believe they need to open it so the T5 garage egress can be permanently shifted to the T7 garage (the two will become a single integrated garage) so the aforementioned arrivals plaza can be built. I also noticed grade separation work underway for the permanent T5/T6 access roads, as well as for the long-awaited T6 departures road ingress ramp.

I’ll leave you with a glimpse of T8’s new wooden slat wall as part of its commercial renovation. Lots of construction walls are up in the headhouse. I really wish they’d extend the wood across the entire wall pre-security.

That’s all for now! Hoping to do one more update later next month to wrap up the year.

Fantastic update. T6’s phase 1 overhang is almost fully clad. I also see stuff going on at T5. Looks like they’re extending the canopy where the new departures road is.

T1’s looking fantastic and is moving along at great speed. It’s going to really transform the JFK international departure experience when it opens.

Here’s some updates from stuff I found on LinkedIn.

JFK T1 announced Menzies Aviation and Worldwide Flight Services were chosen as the ground handling operators for the terminal.

On the JFK T1 LinkedIn page, they shared a really nice nighttime shot of the headhouse.

And here’s a news article with a massive treasure trove of T1 photos.
