The only thing I like about these buildings is that the windows clearly stand out. That allows you to see how many floors there are, as opposed to all-glass buildings that look like one solid block. At least these unimaginative stacked blocks have a sense of scale… only because of the windows. Otherwise these buildings, especially the one closer to the water, are fugly. It looks upside down, and just plain stupid. 🥺 ---

I appreciate any building that brings something unique and original to the skyline. The façade is tasteful but plain. These would be very boring buildings without the crazy cantilevers. I like it. ---

Adjmi’s 550 Clinton does the top-heavy design and repetitive facade much better than this crude stack. I’ll take competence over novelty any day. ---

I think these buildings look fantastic and are one of the few architectural bright spots along the East River. For the most part the new buildings on both sides of the river are snoozefests that are not befitting of their iconic location. The ones that I do like are these, SHoP’s completed American Copper Buildings, the Domino Sugar development and BIG’s two-towered Williamsburg complex. The rest range from mediocre to ugly. The drab slabs at Hunter’s Point and the blinding glass monolith at One Manhattan Square are the worst offenders. ---

That part in the video where we see an ‘optical illusion’ of two buildings appearing to be one large building is the best part of this excellent walking tour. The Williamsburg, Long Island City, and Greenpoint Area waterfront skyline is mostly a series of Artless glass residential towers; then came this Architectural Gem to add some much needed visual interest to this otherwise bleak landscape. I was wondering why I like these more than BIG’s 2 WTC proposal, and I think it’s because of the negative space between the towers. As you can see in those last couple shots it is very striking to see the sky/background framed by those crazy cantilevers. But with BIG’s 2 WTC, the cantilevers did not complement the other towers and clashed against the smooth taper of 1 WTC. Here, the cantilevers on the two towers almost fit together like puzzle pieces, so the “stacked box” motif comes off as thoughtful and not haphazard.
