Nice photo by 5Bfilms from above. I had an odd observation looking at this photo : look how much usable floor space is taken-up by those concrete service cores for elevators, stairs, etc.

I actually think the requirement for 2 means of ‘egress’ is an outdated building code. All that expense and wasted space for something that could be done with a ‘single fire staircase’ rather than two means of egress.

Im confused by this, means of egress does not include the/an elevator, in the instance of almost all the tall and narrow buildings in NYC they do not have 2 separated fire stairs independent of one another, they use fire partitioned scissor stairs for egress to save space. There is no wasted space.

Also, means of egress (if it be 2 or more means of egress depending on the size of the building) is an EXTREMELY important building code, brought on about and rewritten by the events of 9/11, there’s nothing outdated about it.
