Good luck selling it

When I was a kid I would do that thing where you carefully stand on an aluminum can, bend down, and tap each side with one finger on each hand. Then the can would immediately collapse under my weight. I’m not an engineer, but I’m guessing it’s a similar thing.

Yeah, this is just a normal occurrence at every construction site. What a joke…

This will be an easy fix for the folks at Pfizer.

Grind two tabs down to a fine powder; then rub powder vigorously on those bent vertical colums: they will ‘stiffen up’ in no time.

Sarcasm…

The top comment (Credit: commenter BK architect) in the Gothamist article pulled the Dept of Buildings complaint and it said the cause was not the plans but that the contractor/developer didn’t adhere to them.

But I pulled the complaint number and that sentence has been removed. There’s discussion on why this is in the Gothamist article comment section.

Someone jumped the gun

Did we already discuss this? I think the issue is the columns not being enveloped with a steel casing.

Yes, that is exactly what had been the fail point on this project. Here is a definitive explanation on how the steel column was not “Jacketed”.

Very good to see a detailed forensic conclusion of the root cause of this collapse.
